A larger anniversary update
Ghost of Yōtei is set to receive its most substantial post-launch update on October 1, 2026, almost a year after the PlayStation 5 game’s original release on October 2, 2025. The update arrives alongside a new Complete Edition and combines two distinctly different additions: Echoes of Sekigahara, a narrative expansion for Atsu’s campaign, and Most Wanted, a repeatable single-player combat-survival mode with roguelike elements.
The announcement matters because it broadens the game in more than one direction. Echoes of Sekigahara extends the authored, character-led adventure that defined the base game. Most Wanted instead appears designed for shorter, repeatable sessions in which players experiment with combat styles and pursue better runs. Sony is also using the release to package the original game, its existing Legends multiplayer mode and prior digital bonuses into a new edition for newcomers.
For existing owners, the key commercial detail is that the two headline additions will be sold through a Complete Edition Upgrade priced at $14.99 in the United States. A separate free patch will deliver some features to all players, regardless of whether they buy the expansion content.
Echoes of Sekigahara returns to Atsu’s past
Echoes of Sekigahara will tell its story across two time periods. In the present-day strand, Atsu explores a previously unseen valley in Ezo, an area once occupied by The Snake and his Vipers. The flashback material takes the protagonist to the Battle of Sekigahara and revisits a formative period before she returned home to begin her pursuit of the Yōtei Six.
Nagato, a figure from Atsu’s past, is positioned as a central new character. That premise gives the add-on a potentially useful narrative function: it can add context to the protagonist’s life before the events of the main game without requiring the base campaign to be rebuilt around a new ending. It also allows the expansion to develop a new location while still drawing on story threads and adversaries familiar to players.
Sucker Punch has confirmed that the expansion will include new enemies, heavy weapons, armour sets and dyes. The studio has not yet explained the expansion’s length, its map size, or how far through the main story players must progress to access it. Those details will be important in determining whether Echoes of Sekigahara feels like an essential continuation or a self-contained side chapter.
Most Wanted changes the pace
Most Wanted is not an extension of the online Legends mode. It is a single-player combat survival experience described by Sucker Punch as its take on a roguelike. Players begin runs by accepting bounties, earn perks by defeating enemies and unlock additional playable characters over time.
That format introduces a more systems-driven structure than the main campaign. Instead of progressing through a fixed sequence of missions, players will be expected to make repeated attempts and gradually improve their options. The design could give Ghost of Yōtei a longer tail for players who enjoy mastering its combat rather than revisiting narrative quests.
Three playable fighters have been shown so far, each associated with a different weapon style. Atsu uses dual katana, Oyuki specialises in the kusarigama, and Nagato uses a yari. The choice suggests that Most Wanted will place more emphasis on differentiated combat roles than the base game’s single-protagonist campaign. Whether those characters have unique abilities, progression paths or story context remains to be seen.
The new mode also sits apart from Ghost of Yōtei Legends, the free online co-operative addition released earlier in 2026. Legends offers two-player story missions and four-player survival matches, followed by a four-player Raid. Most Wanted is therefore not a replacement for that multiplayer offering; it is an attempt to create a replayable survival option for solo players.
A clearer choice for new and returning players
The Complete Edition will cost $69.99 in the US and includes the main game, Echoes of Sekigahara, Most Wanted, Ghost of Yōtei Legends and the content previously bundled with the Digital Deluxe Edition. Buyers can play the main game and Legends immediately, while the new expansion and survival mode will be delivered in the October 1 patch.
The package also includes the Charm of Hokkyokusei. Customers who purchase by September 30 will receive early access to the Sakai Armor for Atsu when the update arrives. That armour is a deliberate link to Ghost of Tsushima, although Ghost of Yōtei remains a standalone chapter set centuries after the earlier game.
For current owners, the $14.99 Complete Edition Upgrade is the more relevant option. It includes the two new gameplay additions and, for people who did not previously own the Digital Deluxe Edition, unlocks that edition’s in-game items and the Charm of Hokkyokusei. The pre-order deadline also applies to the early Sakai Armor unlock.
This approach avoids selling a full-priced reissue solely to people who want the extra content. At the same time, the Complete Edition gives Sony a straightforward entry point for players who skipped the original launch and now want the game’s single-player and multiplayer content in one purchase.
Free additions extend beyond the paid content
The October patch will include several features for every Ghost of Yōtei owner. Beauty of Yōtei will present a screensaver-like view of Ezo’s landscapes, making the game’s environments usable as a more passive visual experience and as a new setting for Photo Mode captures.
Other additions are more practical. Players will be able to retain one armour set’s appearance while using another set’s statistics, removing a familiar tension between visual customisation and combat optimisation. A high-contrast option is also being added, alongside new Watanabe Mode music tracks, Photo Mode stamps, New Game+ cosmetics and trophies connected to the new content.
The feature split is notable. Sony is reserving the new narrative and repeatable combat experiences for paying customers, but it is giving the wider player base useful customisation, accessibility and presentation updates. That can help keep the community on the same technical version while ensuring the expansion has a clear value proposition.
What remains unanswered
The announcement establishes the broad shape of Ghost of Yōtei’s next phase but deliberately leaves room for further detail. Sucker Punch says it will share more about both Echoes of Sekigahara and Most Wanted before launch. Important open questions include the scale of the valley, the number of missions or encounters in the survival mode, how progression works between runs and whether the new characters will be available anywhere beyond Most Wanted.
For now, October 1 looks less like a conventional downloadable chapter alone and more like a first-anniversary refresh. It adds story material for players invested in Atsu, a solo replayability mode for combat specialists and a range of no-cost upgrades for the existing audience. Its success will depend on whether those different additions feel like a coherent expansion of Ghost of Yōtei rather than a collection of parallel features.
