Cost pressure is reaching the budget end of the market

The prospect of higher prices for entry-level graphics cards and monitors in the second half of 2026 is no longer simply a supply-chain warning. Retail pricing data, vendor commentary and memory-market forecasts all indicate that the cost base for consumer PC hardware has moved sharply upward. The result is likely to be most visible in lower-priced products, where brands, board partners and retailers have comparatively little margin available to protect headline prices.

The immediate issue for graphics cards is memory. Consumer GPUs depend on GDDR memory, while the wider semiconductor industry is dealing with intense demand for high-bandwidth memory and server-oriented DRAM from AI infrastructure. Suppliers can allocate manufacturing capacity towards higher-value products, leaving conventional memory categories more exposed to tight availability and higher contract prices.

TrendForce forecast substantial increases in conventional DRAM and NAND flash contract prices during the first half of 2026, and its later outlook still pointed to further increases in the third quarter, albeit at a slower pace. That does not translate mechanically into an identical percentage increase in the price of a graphics card or a monitor. It does, however, remove a major cushion from the supply chain at a time when other costs, including panels, controllers, logistics and tariffs, also remain volatile.

Why entry-level products are especially exposed

A budget GPU has a lower selling price but still requires a processor, video memory, a printed circuit board, power-delivery components, cooling hardware, packaging and distribution. When one or more of those inputs rises in cost, the increase represents a larger share of the final retail price than it would for a flagship product. A manufacturer of a premium card may be able to adjust its configuration, reduce promotional spending or accept a modest margin reduction. Those options are more limited on a card designed to compete at a strict price point.

The same principle applies to displays. Entry-level monitors are often sold in a highly competitive market with thin margins and frequent promotional pricing. A modest increase in an LCD panel, display driver, backlight assembly or shipping cost can undermine the economics of a low-cost 24-inch or 27-inch monitor more quickly than those of a premium OLED or Mini-LED model.

That is important because “entry-level” does not necessarily mean older technology. Many inexpensive monitors now offer high refresh rates, adaptive-sync support and IPS panels, while lower-cost GPUs are expected to handle modern games, creative workloads and increasingly local AI features. The value proposition depends on fitting a wider set of capabilities into a tightly managed bill of materials. Component inflation directly challenges that formula.

Evidence is firmer for GPUs than for monitors

The evidence of graphics-card price pressure is relatively clear, though the scale differs by region, model and retailer. Recent reports have described higher GPU-and-memory package prices charged to add-in-board partners, and US retail tracking has shown sharp increases in listed prices for several current-generation graphics cards. AMD has also said that higher memory and component costs are weighing on PC and gaming demand in the second half of the year.

This does not mean every GPU will rise at the same time. Existing inventory can delay a price revision, individual retailers may use discounts to clear stock, and currency movements can change local outcomes. Moreover, a manufacturer’s suggested retail price can remain unchanged while real street prices rise because discounts disappear or cheaper partner models become unavailable.

For monitors, the case requires more nuance. Panel-market indicators have recently suggested relatively stable monitor-panel pricing, rather than a broad immediate surge comparable to memory. At the same time, Omdia has warned that rising memory costs, energy-related pressures and tariffs are causing manufacturers to reconsider pricing across display supply chains. A monitor vendor may therefore raise prices even if the panel itself is not experiencing a sharp increase.

This distinction matters. A monitor price increase should not automatically be attributed to panel scarcity. For a finished display, the final price reflects the panel but also the scaler, power supply, enclosure, stand, cables, freight, regional compliance and retailer margin. Budget monitor makers are particularly likely to review prices when several smaller cost increases arrive together.

Higher retail prices may not look like formal price rises

Consumers may first experience the shift as fewer bargains rather than a clear new list price. Promotions on entry-level GPUs and monitors are often financed jointly by brands, distributors and retailers. When costs rise, those programmes can be reduced, shortened or limited to specific models. A graphics card that previously sold below its official launch price can consequently become more expensive without any announcement from its chip designer.

Product availability is another factor. If low-cost configurations become less attractive to produce, brands may place greater emphasis on models with more memory, larger coolers or more premium monitor features. That can raise the practical minimum cost of buying into a category even when an officially low-priced product remains on paper.

The effects may also be uneven. Cards using larger amounts of video memory have more direct exposure to GDDR cost inflation, while lower-memory models may face a smaller absolute increase. Yet inexpensive models are not necessarily protected: their margins are usually narrower, and a fixed rise in manufacturing or distribution costs can be disproportionately damaging.

What buyers should watch in the months ahead

For buyers who need a replacement GPU or monitor, the key is not to assume that a future discount will necessarily be better than a current competitive price. That said, a forecast of upward pressure is not a reason to make a rushed purchase of unsuitable hardware. The better approach is to assess value over the intended lifespan of the product.

For graphics cards, compare the final price rather than the nominal launch price, and consider memory capacity, power requirements, game performance at the target resolution and warranty support. A cheaper model that already struggles with intended workloads can be a false economy, particularly if price inflation narrows the gap to a more capable alternative.

For monitors, purchasers should prioritise the characteristics that cannot easily be corrected later: size, resolution, refresh rate, panel behaviour, ergonomic adjustment and connectivity. The lowest advertised price is less meaningful if it excludes a usable stand, has inadequate ports or compromises too heavily on image quality.

A market signal, not a universal rule

The emerging pattern is one of broad upward cost pressure rather than a guaranteed uniform price increase across all entry-level GPUs and monitors. Memory constraints are the strongest and most immediate driver for graphics cards. Displays face a more mixed situation, with panel pricing only one element in a wider cost structure.

Still, the direction of travel is unfavourable for the budget PC market. Higher component costs tend to reduce discounts, constrain low-margin configurations and steer suppliers towards products that can sustain better returns. If those conditions persist through the remainder of 2026, entry-level hardware may become harder to find at the prices consumers have come to expect.
