The owner described this as a repeat visit to Apple service. After an initial attempt to address the issue, the key reportedly remained jammed and the computer was sent away for a repair expected to take one to two weeks while parts were obtained. The owner also stated that an out-of-warranty quote was $895, although the work was covered because the device remained under warranty.
That is a substantial figure for a fault that appears, at first glance, to concern one key. It should not, however, be interpreted as a published fixed price for every affected MacBook Pro. Apple’s repair site says that it inspects Macs before providing a personalised estimate, that prices can be subject to tax and shipping, and that authorised service providers may set their own fees. The reported amount is therefore best understood as a quote for this specific case, not a universal keyboard-repair tariff.
Why one key can involve a large repair
Modern notebook keyboards are not necessarily serviced as isolated, inexpensive components. Heat is a hypothesis, not an established cause
The owner believes prolonged high-load development work may have contributed to the failure. The Delete key is positioned near the laptop’s exhaust area, and the user speculated that thermal expansion could have distorted the surrounding key bed sufficiently for the key to catch.
This is plausible as a hypothesis in the everyday sense that materials change dimensions as temperatures change. But it remains unproven in this case. There is no teardown, engineering analysis, service report or statement from Apple establishing that heat caused the key to stick. Equally, a stuck key can arise from debris, a damaged key mechanism, misalignment, manufacturing variation or another local mechanical issue.
The online discussion offers anecdotal counterpoints rather than corroboration. Some owners said they use M5 Max systems for demanding rendering, development or media workloads without keyboard failures. One other participant reported a different stuck key after two months of ownership. Such comments may warrant attention, but they cannot reveal a failure rate, identify a common cause or show whether affected systems share a particular configuration, factory, production period or usage pattern.
Claims in the thread that custom-built systems made in China may have weaker quality control are especially unsupported. No evidence was presented tying the reported fault to a particular manufacturing location, and supply-chain origin alone cannot establish the cause of a mechanical problem.

The available evidence centres on one detailed owner report and a limited number of replies from other users.
That distinction matters. A single well-documented incident can reveal an important individual service problem, particularly when the likely out-of-warranty expense is high. It does not by itself demonstrate that the cooling system, chassis design or M5 Max platform is defective across the product line.

Users should also document the fault with photographs or video, retain service paperwork, and confirm whether an estimate covers a single repair attempt or a broader assembly replacement.
For prospective buyers, the episode is a reminder to weigh warranty coverage and repair arrangements alongside processor performance and memory capacity. The reported $895 quote may be real for this owner’s circumstances, but it is not evidence of a standard charge or of a confirmed M5 Max design failure. The more defensible conclusion is narrower: an expensive, warranty-covered repair has been reported, and Apple has not publicly explained its cause.
